The Challenge

Many rural schools lack even the most basic educational resources, including textbooks, exercise books, pens, school uniforms, backpacks, and other essential learning materials. Without these necessities, children struggle to develop foundational literacy and numeracy skills, limiting their academic achievement and future opportunities.

Literacy is the foundation of opportunity. It opens doors to secondary education, higher learning, meaningful employment, and lifelong independence. Without it, children remain trapped in a cycle of poverty and limited possibilities.

For vulnerable girls, the barriers are even greater.

According to Kenya’s Ministry of Education (2024):

• 1 in 10 school-age girls misses school each month because they cannot afford sanitary products.
• Many girls lose more than 60 learning days each year, affecting their academic performance, confidence, and school attendance.
• Some eventually drop out altogether due to stigma, absenteeism, or financial hardship.

Without access to education, many girls face increased risks of early marriage, teenage pregnancy, economic dependence, and lifelong poverty.
