Over 70% of the people who live below the poverty line globally are women. To these women, poverty does not only mean scarcity and want, but also includes rights denied, opportunities curtailed and voices silenced. ACOH supports the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment through a community-driven development (CDD) approach.
We believe communities know their problems best, and women’s empowerment and equity can only be achieved by addressing the route course of the problem. Therefore, we leverage community resources to address the challenges better and improve their quality of life.
Additionally, studies show that poverty can increase poverty, and women and girls living in poverty face multiple forms of discrimination and face increased risks of violence and sexual exploitation as a result. Poor girls are 2.5 times more likely to be married off young than those from rich families. Women and girls who experience domestic or intimate partner violence have fewer options to leave violent relationships, due to their lack of income and resources. Through advocacy and economic empowerment programs, we are therefore able to ensure vulnerable women can sustain their livelihoods and fight for an end to gender-based violence.
Many young women drop out of school due to a lack of tuition. Without any skills, they have no chance of getting out of poverty. You can support these young ladies by donating to support the vocational training program ( Carpentry, Hairdressing, Mechanics, Plumbing, Garment making, Food and beverage, Building, etc).
Our programs focus on capacity training, food security, economic and social development, water and sanitation, and other resources/opportunities/assets to help them achieve equity, sustainability, and security.
By working with women’s community-based organizations (CBOs) and self-help groups, we are able to implement long-term sustainable projects that empower them socially and economically.
Below are some of the women groups we have partnered with.
